Training Your Gut:

Business Edition

Over 40% of CEOs said they rely on intuition over big data for decisions. That’s a hefty percentage.

While big data and analytics are monumentally helpful in making decisions, a seasoned intuition proves itself irreplaceable. If the good old gut feeling was not to be trusted, humans would have perished centuries ago. It’s our evolutionary advantage. Learning to hone and wield it wisely can make or break your business decision-making. That’s why you need to practice it like a skill!

How It Works

Our brain is always making connections and paying attention to patterns. Each pattern is stored in long-term memory for future situations, according to Psychology Today. The thing is… are the right patterns being created? It all depends if you have the right practice and environment. Let’s say whenever you answered the phone, your friend, Moe, gave you a cookie. After a while, you’d come to associate those two occurrences as a pattern. You’d probably be looking for Moe and craving cookies every time the phone rang.

That’s a completely far-out scenario, but it makes a point. In the real world, you’re not getting a cookie when you answer the phone, so that experience would give you a faulty gut feeling. That’s why it is imperative to develop true gut intuition with devoted practice.

Hone Your Intuition

Forbes explains that intuition is the body’s way of sensing threats before rationality comes in. The body has a physical response to danger or a lack thereof. Sometimes it’s a twinge in your stomach, a headache, and/or tensing muscles. Through time and experience, you learn what your signals are.

Once signal recognition is down pat, put yourself in an environment where you can learn the right patterns. Immersing yourself in your business is the way to do this. Whether conscious or not, your brain makes patterns of events. Just like computer coding, your brain stores it as an if-then statement.

“If I touch the hot stove, then I will get burned.”

gets stored the same way

“If I diversify my stocks, then I will mitigate my risk.”

Building your pattern arsenal with trial and error will sharpen your intuition and make you a better businessperson.

Your Gut Versus the Robots

The robots do have a lot on us… the ability to calculate thousands of equations in seconds, develop highly-accurate charts, and keep our society running efficiently.

They enhance our human performance insurmountably. Big data offers insight like never before. It gives validity and weight to a particular decision. However, the intuition our race has spent centuries developing should not be tossed aside. The two should be used as a system of check and balances. Business decisions are delicate. Finding the balance between intuition and data can determine your career success. Keep working at it and you’ll find what works!

All You Need Is the Air That We Breathe

All You Need Is the Air That We Breathe

What the World Is Doing to Improve Air Quality

Too often we are afraid to watch the news in fear of upsetting ourselves. For hours, we have sat waiting for a stroke of good news throughout the rainstorm of bad. Well, your search for positive news has led you here and we intend to give you some!

Sit back and get ready for some good news!

Education

We are much more informed than we were years ago, especially the younger generations. I bet your neighbor’s kid in elementary school knows more about pollution than the average adult. If you visit the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s website, you will find many clear, interactive graphics and facts on the 2019 AirTrends report. Websites such as these make learning about world issues accessible and almost fun. Facts do not always have to be shrouded in a cloak of a boring Times New Roman, 12-font essay.

The Global Education Monitoring (GEM) report explained that people with more education are more likely to be concerned about the environment. That makes sense, but it does not mean that is the case for everyone. Access to air pollution information is abundant in this age of information. Therefore, education on the subject has increased.

Legislature

There are strong examples of laws making a difference in air quality. Below are cities that have made monumental changes:

  1. London has had a Clear Air Act in place since 1956, according to BBC. By 1968, the air quality had “substantially improved”. Currently, the city has imposed a Ultra Low Emission Zone in central London, which older vehicles need to pay a fine to enter.

  1. The CCA reports that Beijing, China has improved its air quality with the implementation of legislation. The Clean Air Action Plan created some very impactful changes!

  1. 35 city mayors across the world pledged to give their citizens cleaner air in the C40 Clean Air Cities Declaration. The CCA states that these cities are agreeing to “implement substantive clean air policies by 2025”.

The world needs change and it needs it fast in terms of air pollution. Legislature is a great way to keep people on track, but commitment needs to come from all places, not just government.

Technology

We live in a world of innovation. Intuitive minds are getting credit for their magnificent ideas. Here are some inventions intended to battle air pollution:

  1. Did you know that there is a tower that sucks up dirty air for free? The Smog Free Tower, created by the Studio Roosegarde, “cleans 30.000 m3 per hour and uses a small amount of green electricity”.

  1. Bikes are healthier for the environment, but what if they also cleaned the air? Photosynthesis Bikes, created by Lightfog Creative & Design, do just this! A filter on the front of the bike takes in dirty and sends back clean air to the rider.

  1. Graviky Labs at MIT created AIR-INK. Carbon soot from car exhaust is collected to create ink for pens and markers…. Amazing, right?

How Can We Do Better?

The US economy has seen economic growth with the enactment of air pollution initiatives, according to the EPA. Environmental research opens jobs for people, as well.

However, you do see a sturdy growth with vehicle miles traveled. Yet, with many people stuck in their houses, it can be assumed that vehicle emissions have been lowering. If remote work becomes the new norm, vehicle emissions might even curve down. Companies such as Apple and Twitter have already made preparations for stay-at-home work for the rest of 2020, according to USA Today. Even if companies alternated the days their employees worked, the decrease in work travel emission would decrease tremendously.

NextCore Media has always been a remote company. Since 2016, we have been running on online meetings, emails, and phone calls. Because of this, our company is completely paperless and our employees do not contribute to work traffic air pollution. Imagine if more companies worked remotely. Traffic hour pollution (and traffic) would not be as severe, that’s for sure! This is one way to spare our air!

We are nowhere close to saving the planet that we know and love, but we have countless individuals striving to get closer. With resources given to the right planet-saving people, who knows what could be accomplished. Making donations can make a tremendous impact. We are not powerless against pollution. It is time we take a stand and fight for our planet!’

Make a Difference in Your Community: We Know… it’s Cliché

Make a Difference in Your Community:

We Know… it’s Cliché

Yes, we know that this title is intimidating. The world seems to be turning at an unfamiliar pace. Sometimes the minutes pass by, begrudgingly, especially while trapped indoors. Other times it seems like someone pressed the fast-forward button and you wish you could press pause.

We know one thing:

The world is constantly changing and rearranging.

Now is the time of extreme uncertainty and fear, we need to unite. Together, we must venture on into the unknown with our best selves extending outward into the community.

Change starts small.

Let me say that again….

Change starts small

But let’s look at the word small. It may mask itself as negative connotation, but it is much more than what it seems. Imagine you are a doorperson. You greet each person walking in and out of your building. Two people greet you kindly on their way out the door. Another 5 people respectfully make their way out of the building. One person rudely addresses you and hits your shoulder on the way out.

Who are you going to remember: the 2 wonderful people, the 5 respectful people, or the one bad one? You would probably remember the people from the opposite ends of the spectrum. The kind ones and the disrespectful one.

If there were more people in the kind category of individuals, visualize the amount of positivity that would be added to your day.

That’s what the world could be like if more people jumped on board.

I would say the biggest (and smallest) help you can give is support. Support takes many shapes and sizes. Hey, if you are an award-winning biochemist who can develop a cure for the coronavirus, you go! 👏 That’s incredibly amazing. You do your thing!

Yet, surprisingly, not everyone is a super talented biochemist. That does not mean you cannot help. It just means you are going to have to get crafty!

Support extends from appreciation.

Appreciation for the parents trying to stay calm for their children.

Appreciation for the people whose loved ones are ill.

Appreciation for the individuals who risk their health every day to keep society running.

We need to sit back and acknowledge the good amidst this unique period of history. Most of all, we need to remember that it does not take much to be a positive force throughout. A thank you can make a difference just as a hefty donation can.

I implore you to get creative and find the most amazing ways to signal your thanks. Some of us have quite a bit of extra time on our hands anyway.
